The History of Futures Trading

There are many different ways in which investors can buy and sell stocks or products in order to make money for themselves. Each way has its advantages and disadvantages. One of the ways in which trades can be made is by futures trading. This type of trade has its roots deep in the middle of the 1800s when farmers and dealers made deals in regards to the buying and selling of a farmer’s crops.

The early futures trading market began when farmers would go into the big cities and trade their goods for cash. In the beginning, these trades were made on the spot where the crops were sold for cash immediately. Eventually, many farmers began selling their crops before they were harvested. They would arrange for the dealer to pay a specified price once the harvest was made and would promise a set amount of crop to be delivered. Contracts were signed and a deposit was often made.

Futures trading did not guarantee a set price, however. Since there were so many factors that could determine how the crop turned out or if there even was a crop, the prices could change. If the weather was poor and crops had a low harvest, the price would go up because the demand would be higher. The dealers would then have to pay more for their share of the crops. However, if the supply of a crop was high, prices would often drop. Futures trading was a gamble even then.

This futures trading deal would also allow for farmers or dealers to sell their contracts to other farmers or dealers. For instance, if a farmer found they would not have enough of a crop to fulfill their end of the bargain, they may sell their contract to another farmer who could fulfill the deal. Dealers could do the same, selling their contract to another dealer who needed the crop. This allowed for many options for farmers and dealers alike.

There are many advantages and disadvantages to futures trading [http://www.tradebrite.com]. In many cases, it can be beneficial to both parties and will allow for each person to get exactly what they want.
